The history of Maastricht is divided into four times when the city always had a changing function: Roman fortress, religious capital, fortified city and early industrial center. Maastricht has emerged as a link in the connection route between the ancient Gaul and Germania.

Because Maastricht has retained this function as a junction city until early in the twentieth century, the city has brought much prosperity. The Second World War in the twentieth century led to a decline in the prosperity of the city. After the war Maastricht has reclaimed its vigor again and is currently the roaring capital of the province of Limburg.

The city

Maastricht is almost at the southernmost tip of the Netherlands. The city is situated on the Sint-Pietersberg, the only mountain in the Netherlands. Through the city flows one of the major rivers of the country, the Maas. This city has an area of over 60km² and is near the border with Belgium and Germany and is therefore a beloved city for our Eastern and Southern neighbors.

Maastricht is divided into five districts: Maastricht Centre, South West, North West, North East and South East. The languages spoken there are Dutch and the city of Maastricht dialect.

A fun way to spend your weekend in Maastricht is in a hostel.
