City Sights

The city of Maastricht is known for its many ancient and modern attractions. When you visit the city, you should definitely not miss the following highlights. From the hostel you can reach the most highlights ongoing.

Hall of Maastricht

The town hall of Maastricht has been designed by renowned Dutch architect Pieter Post, in the 17th century. The architectural style of this Hall is in Dutch Renaissance style.

Sint Servaas Basiliek

Sint Servaas-Basiliek

This basilica is between three squares: Vrijthof, the Keizer Karel Square and Henric of Veldekeplein. This is the oldest existing church in the Netherlands. During 1976-1981 restoration campaign was prepared and lasted from June 1981 until July 1993.

Helpoort

The Helpoort is the oldest city gate in Maastricht. This is part of the first city wall, built in 1229, commissioned by Henrik I. This is a rectangular gatehouse on either side two semicircular developed towers.

Vrijthof

The Vrijthof is a square just before the Basilica of Saint Servatius. This square is known for its many monuments, a number of cultural facilities, numerous cafe terraces and events from time to time. In this square you can also find the St. John's Church, Theater aan het Vrijthof, the old military Hoofdwacht and the Spanish Government.

Maastrichter market

This market takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays, the Friday one is bigger. The market is located just beside the Vrijthof. On this square stands the City Hall of Maastricht. This square was created during the time the City Hall was build.

Kazematten

The Casemates in Maastricht arose in 1575 and 1825. Casemates are a network of tunnels and mine shafts. During World War II it served as shelters.

Bassin

The old inner harbor of Maastricht, called Bassin, located in the north of the center. This was built in from 1824 to 1826. Before that stood up to the French period the monastery complexes of the Teutonic Order and the Antoni Eaters.

Onze-Lieve-Vrouweplein

This square is in the center of Maastricht. The name comes from the Notre-Dame Basilica, which is also on this square. This square is known for its hospitality. There are a few pubs and a hotel. The theater De Bonbonnière is a short distance.

Bonnefantenmuseum

The Bonnefanten Museum is a museum designed by an Italian architect, Aldo Rossi. This museum of fine arts. This museum is definitely worth a visit!
